Furnace Installation Day: A Santa Cruz Homeowner Checklist

A furnace installation should end with a working heating system and a homeowner who knows how to use it. Before installation day, a few practical questions can make the visit easier and help you understand what is included.
This checklist is for Santa Cruz homeowners preparing for an agreed furnace installation. Your own written proposal and contractor's instructions determine the work and schedule for your home.
Before the installation date
Review the equipment models and agreed scope. Confirm whether the work includes removal of the old equipment, duct or venting changes, thermostat installation, startup checks and cleanup. Ask who handles any required permits, inspections and testing.
If there are exclusions or items awaiting assessment, clarify them now. Also ask how unexpected findings will be explained and how you approve any additional cost. Keep a copy of the proposal where you can easily find it.
Prepare access without moving the equipment
- Clear the route from the entrance to the furnace and thermostat.
- Move fragile belongings and ordinary stored items away from the agreed work area.
- Arrange a safe, separate space for pets and children.
- Tell the team about gates, parking limits or difficult access.
- Ask which rooms or attic access points the team will need.
Leave the existing furnace, gas connections, electrical wiring and venting to the technicians. If something heavy or unsafe blocks access, discuss it with the contractor instead of trying to move it yourself.
Understand the day's schedule
Ask when the team expects to arrive, how long the planned work may take and whether there will be an interruption to heating or power. Duct alterations, access difficulties or additional approved work can affect the schedule.
Tell the contractor if someone in the household has a particular comfort or access need. It is easier to plan around that before the old system is disconnected. Agree on the best person and phone number for installation-day questions.
Ask what will be checked before handoff
A successful installation involves more than the equipment turning on. Ask the team to explain the checks appropriate to your furnace and the work performed, including heating operation, airflow, controls and applicable safety checks.
ENERGY STAR's quality-installation guidance emphasizes correct sizing, airflow and duct condition. If the job includes cooling equipment, ask about the checks relevant to that part of the system too.
Mention any remaining unusual noise or comfort concern while the team is present. Some performance differences require explanation; others may need a closer look. You should know whom to contact if a concern appears later.
Have the controls demonstrated
Ask the technician to show you how to select heating mode, adjust the temperature and use any schedule. If an app is optional, ask how to operate the system with the wall control as well. Take notes or have another household member join the walkthrough.
Locate the filter and ask which type and size to use, how to access it safely and how often to check it for your home. Request the equipment's operating instructions rather than relying on memory.
Keep the handoff documents together
- Equipment model and serial information
- Invoice and agreed installation scope
- Manufacturer warranty and registration information
- Installer's labor-warranty terms
- Applicable inspection or testing records
- Instructions and the service contact number
Manufacturer coverage and installation labor coverage are separate. Ask for the terms that apply to your exact equipment and contract.
